Active Release Techniques Treatment/Therapy

Dr. Corsello is certified in Active Release Techniques (ART), which is a method founded by Dr. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of soft tissue dysfunction, also known as repetitive stress injuries or “overuse” syndromes as well as chronic pain, carpal tunnel, post-operative scar tissue and hyper extension/flexion injury (whiplash). These syndromes cause people to have pain, characterized as sensations of tingling, burning, aching and weakness that they may suffer with for years and that may seem to be otherwise undiagnosable. Dr. Corsello helps patients with this technique in Stratford, Connecticut.

What Causes Soft Tissue Dysfunction?

Statistics show that soft tissue injury is the major injury problem in this country, surpassing back pain and worsening by 670 percent since 2006. Dr. Leahy states, "Past therapies such as massage, heat, cold, electrical stimulation, rest, exercise and surgery–-have all failed to treat them effectively.”

When a muscle, tendon, ligament, or nerve is damaged from trauma or overuse, the body will attempt to repair the damage with scar tissue. These scar tissue adhesions left untreated result in gradual loss of function and increased pain. Soft tissue dysfunction often leads to a loss of flexibility, strength, and range of motion. Active Release breaks up the connective tissue adhesions, restores circulation, and increases your range of motion, flexibility, and strength. The treatments can be a bit uncomfortable, or even a little painful, but this pain is an important indicator that the problem has been located and signals that the treatments are correcting the injury. Patients often experience soreness immediately following the treatment (as with heavy exercise), but then feel better a few days later.

Why Active Release is Different

Active Release is not massage, physiotherapy, or chiropractic care. While those procedures relieve muscle and motion dysfunction, they do not necessarily address scar tissue formation. Although ART is a popular technique among professional athletes, regardless of your activity level, you can benefit from ART. From those who are victims of car accidents -- or even looking to improve their performance on the golf course -- Active Release has proven to be a fast, effective, non-invasive way to heal a wide variety of soft tissue injuries.

What is an ART treatment like?

Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. These treatment protocols - over 500 specific moves - are unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. The treatment is tailored for the specific patient and his or her injuries.
